Model United Nations organised by Maharashtra United Nations Association (MUNA) in collaboration with D.G.Ruparel college of Arts, Science and Commerce, Mumbai for three days, 17, 18 and19 December 2007.
Monday, the seventeenth December 2007, spelt a new dawn for Mumbai youth as MUNA in association with D.G.Ruparel College hosted its first inaugural Model United Nations. (R- MUN -07).
The three days Model United Nations was entirely organized by the college youth. This Model United Nations got huge response from different colleges and schools of Mumbai within the short span of time. The young student on the secretariat had taken care of food, conference, venue, discipline, and other arrangements including the budget on their own during the entire event for all three days.
There were three committees 1. Model Security Council, 2. Model General Assembly and 3. Model Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
The student delegates from different colleges have registered themselves for each of the above committees for three days as per their choice. Accordingly the countries and countries and batches were printed and assigned to each student delegates participating in the Model United Nations. Special files with the lobo of Ruparel College and MUNA were also printed for each youth delegates.
The topics for discussion were, 1. The Indo – Pakistan issue in the Model Security Council. 2. Israel – Palestine Crises in the Model general Assembly and 3. Human Trafficking and Refugee Crises for Economic and Security Council (ECOSOC).
All the student delegates participated in the discussion enthusiastically. The organizer had prepared the study guide for all the above subjects to facilitate the participants in their preparation and was posted on the R- MUN website beforehand. Near about 40 colleges and IB schools participated in the R – MUN 07.
Ms. Rajvi Mehta the Secretary General of R- MUN 07, a 16 year FYJC student of Ruparel College chaired the General Assembly. Mr. Juzer Tambawala Co – Secretary General R- MUN 07 chaired Security Council and another student of Ruparel Ritvik Chavan chaired the ECOSOC.
The youth members had also formed a press committee to report about the proceedings and outcome of the Model United Nations for all three days.
These three days Model UN got wide publicity both in print as well as electronic media, thanks to Star News, Lok Satta, Navbharat and Yuva News Papers.
The last day i.e. on 19 December 2007 in the evening the student delegates were awarded with the specially designed certificates singed by Principal of Ruparel, Youth Secretariat and MUNA office bearers. Also the best speaker best delegate in Model UN were declared and awarded by the hands of Mr. A.A.Syed Secretary General of MUNA, Dr. Pradeep Kulkarni- Principal Ruparel College and special Guest Dr. Rekha Bharkhande.
Mr. Ashraf Ahmed Shaikh of MUNA was the Organising Chairman and Advisor of R- MUN 07 i.e. Model UN. Who coordinated between various departments and helped the secretariat in the organization.
Ms. Pheroza J. Godrej, President, Ms. Mohini Mathur Executive Chairperson and Mr. A.A.Syed, the Secretary General of MUNA provided their expertise and experience to the youth organizers in organizing this mega event Mumbai has ever witnessed.
United Nations Information Centre, New Delhi deserves the special thanks for their support by sending the posters, literature and useful books which were displayed in the committee rooms and were also distributed to the student delegates.
The theme for the three days Model UN was “Global Concern for Global Solutions”, as discussed in the above committees. This Model United Nations has resulted in reshaping the young minds to think and focus on various issues and to work collectively towards various international as well local issues rather than conflicting on it.
After seeing the success, all the delegates and distinguished guests requested the organizers to make this Model United Nations an annual event on regular basis.
